For the exhibition, five Creativity Explored artists were paired with five local artists to create works that respond to each other’s studio practice. The impetus for the exhibition was to use the language of color to start a dialogue between Creativity Explored artists and established Bay Area artists in which both sets of artists learn and challenge one another, pushing the work in new directions. Artist/Curator Jenny Sharaf used an intuitive process to select and pair the artists, inviting each pair to develop work in tandem – either as a direct collaboration or more of a formal call and response.

Artist, gallerist and blogger Alyssa Block came to my studio recently for her blog Workspace SF which features portraits of local artist studios. She takes all her pictures with color film then scans them to her blog. Seeing her images reminded me that nothing replaces the feel of traditional color photography. Thanks Alyssa!

The story behind this is that I was on a bike ride in Golden Gate park, going down JFK Hwy toward Ocean Beach. On the side of the road, on a small stretch of grass in between the curb and the sidewalk, there was this couple who were totally enmeshed in one another. It was so public and they were so still that I figured they were probably on mushrooms or something that allowed them to lose all inhibitions with each other and with the people around them. I mean, there were kids and dogs walking on the sidewalk right next to them. I liked the absurdity of the image of the two of them, but I was also curious to know what they were experiencing- a universe of two.

I have a studio in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco. It’s on the second floor of a large warehouse, along with Recchiuti chocolates and the graduate studios of the San Francisco Art Institute. Most days the hallway smells like a combination of chocolate and paint.Click here for more pics and the rest of the text.
